ΠερίληψηThe main objective of the present study is the utilization of XML family of technologies for publishing Cadastral data on the web giving emphasis on the key role of GML model schemas incorporated in the procedure. The overall approach of building this application is separated into three phases. The first phase includes the query and retrieval of cadastral data being initially stored in the Oracle's RDBMS. Retrieved data concerning spatial and thematic information of different cadastral datasets, are then properly exported to XML, which are then subjected into several XSLT transformations, in order to be converted to the necessary presentation and rendering formats. Besides geometric information about each parcel, information concerning other parcel properties like joint owners and legal status of each parcel is made available to the user. XSLT along with XPath are playing an important role in bridging the gap between the relational and the XML data models. Further investigation of the similarities between the two languages allows the relational schema of the database to be mapped to a proper GML schema based on the use of GML 3.0 model's normative schemas. Through this intermediate transformation process, GML cadastral parcel instance documents are also produced along with SVG and HTML, allowing the interchange of the retrieved data between different database systems. The overall mechanism is finally incorporated in a client-server architecture built on java servlet web-to-database connectivity technology, allowing users to access and view spatial and thematic information through the use of HTML forms.
